7/27/2023 0 Comments Newsbar help nextgenupdateWhat was the first video game console? You would be incorrect if you said the Atari 2600, but that’s understandable. The Atari 2600 was one of the first, and it was heavily marketed. It had the key features you would imagine from a video game console, too. But, an earlier console was the first, which was the Magnavox Odyssey. This console was black and white, and you could pick from one of several games even though it didn’t have cartridges at all. Image Source: Polygon About the Magnavox Odyssey Discover the first video game console here. The first commercial home video game console is the Magnavox Odyssey. It was initially developed by a dedicated team at Sanders Associates led by Ralph H. Baer, and it was launched in 1972 in the United States, and the next year, it was released internationally. It can show monochrome black and white, three square dots, and one line of differing height on the screen, with varying dots’ behavior based on the game being played. To display visuals, players set plastic overlays on the screen, and one or two players control their dots using the three knobs and a button on the controller for every game, in line with the rules provided. Tracking score and making sounds were not possible. The Odyssey console came packaged with paper money, dice, and other board game kit to accompany the games. I suggest searching for local tech or design meetups on. Also, if you don’t have any experience like this, going out and finding a local development meetup group can help you grow your skill set and also give you the opportunity to do some networking. These types of “extracurricular” involvements can set you apart from other developers and show that you are not only passionate about web development but also that you are striving to be more proficient at it. Activities, Speaking, or WritingĪn activities section will vary by person, but if you attend or are involved with any web development meetups, hackathons, or teaching groups, or if you speak or write about web development, you should find a place to list that on your resume. Additionally, finding clever ways to group your technical skills into different headings or sections can allow for better readability and clearer hierarchies of proficiencies.Īn example of how Sparkbox developer, Bob Yexley, has grouped his skills into the different heading sections of Web Development, Architecture and Backend, and Tools on his online resume. For example, if you are currently applying for a JavaScript developer job, highlight your JavaScript skills over your HTML or database skills. This section should also be tailored job-by-job if possible. With the thousands of coding languages and tools out there, it’s important to highlight what technologies you have worked with and with which you are most proficient. SkillsĪ skills section is one that is especially specific and essential to developer resumes. This is also true of resumes in web development however, there are a few other sections you can add to highlight web development skills and aptitude. Resumes: Highlight Your Relevant Skills and ActivitiesĪt their most basic level, almost all resumes have a similar layout with sections for education and experience. In this article, I want to share a distillation of our most useful pieces of advice for applying for jobs in the web industry, with the hope that it can help other aspiring web developers. To create the content for the course, I pulled from my own experiences searching for a job, and also made sure to gather the expertise and advice of Sparkbox’s HR person, Jody, and our technical director, Ryan. Over four sessions, I organized and taught the following topics in our Job Preparedness Workshop: resumes, reading developer job postings, cover letters, interview and whiteboard preparation, and salary negotiation. To truly help our apprentices become web developers who can be confident applying for jobs in the web industry, we needed to add a job preparedness section to our curriculum. Yet, teaching development skills alone isn’t quite enough for an effective apprenticeship. Sparkbox has a culture of learning, and we reinforce this culture by teaching and learning from our own apprentices. The hope is that after the six month apprenticeship is over, the apprentices will be able to hit the ground running at a web development company with their newly honed skills. Since 2012, Sparkbox has run an apprenticeship program which allows passionate and eager people from all backgrounds and experience levels to learn about web development in a collaborative way. For the VERY reasonable price they charge this is a fantastic choice for Desktop Publishing Software. It integrates very well with the other Affinity applications (Designer and Photo) and works with files from many other applications as well. PROSĪffinity Publisher is a clean, fast, feature-rich Desktop Publishing application which makes content creation and manipulation reasonably simple, but also has enough advanced tools that power-users will be satisfied with it as well. Having worked with many other Desktop Publishing packages over the years I had no trouble adapting to Affinity's interface and processes. I've used Affinity Publisher to redesign my company's marketing flyers, envelopes and other branded documents with great success. Maybe it's just me but I don't really see the difference unless I do a large effect like making the contrast really dark. I haven't figured this out yet, but when working with stacked photos I have a hard time seeing the difference in the before and after photo when doing side by sides. You have a before/after (side by side is best), the before and after split photo then the regular photo itself that will show you the difference once applied. You can choose 3 settings that will show the difference in any effects used. it does a great job at stacking without it looking blurry. Affinity has a photo combining/stacking option. With a drone, you have to account for any type of movement like wind and the drone itself adjusting to the gps position where you have it hovering so each photo may be slightly off. You'd simply take all of the photos and combine them. With drone photography (especially at night), you most likely will be taking photos with the auto exposure bracketing (AEB) setting which takes several photos really fast to allow the most light into the sensor to help the photos appear brighter at night. I like how easy it is to select what you'd like to do with photos. The menus in Affinity are well organized where other programs I ask myself why they put something here or there and it doesn't make sense. I like everything streamlined and right where I need it. It's difficult at first, but there really wasn't a huge learning curve for me compared to Photoshop. This is probably the best software that I've used where it's advanced but not overly difficult. But this isn't a software meant to be used alone without it's companions Photo and Designer. If you buy a set of brushes for Photo or Designer, you have them available also here. You also have the flexibility of a text processor like Word where you can create the table of contents, for example, but you can now add different styles to this so you can have an attractive table of contents. If you have a one-man-army designer who does it all, this is the best tool as you can switch easily between Photo editing, to vector editing and back to document editing on a mouse-click. So, on a single file you can have all different sections of a Magazine and all the different styles and you don't need to work them separately. PROSĪffinity Publisher allows you to create a whole set of text styles you can switch from master to master. This allows me to offer more services to my clients who are always consuming services on-demand, and also allows me to create a product on record time. I use this to design books and, as I am also the artist, I can switch easily and draw something related to the story and then jump back to my book and keep working. 7/27/2023 0 Comments Bodega bay boat tunacanWith rod and reel, a fight can last hours. with a big Pacific bluefin tuna he caught after a 21/2 fight near the Deep Reef out of Pillar Point Harbor Fred WilsonĬatching bluefin tuna requires specialized trolling skills where anglers run their boats at 5 and 6 mph, trailing giant skirted jigs and other lures, often far behind their boats. “That tuna tired out all five guys and we went through the rotation again before we landed it,” Mattusch said. On his boat, five experienced anglers took turns fighting a 5-foot bluefin. Whales all over the place, there’s lots of birds and the squid guys are happy.” “Bluefin are jumping all over, chasing the bait (anchovies). “I’ve never heard of anything like this,” Mattusch said. Most believe the tuna have been drawn in by vast schools of juvenile anchovies that have also attracted large numbers of humpback whales and shorebirds to the area, said Tom Mattusch, captain of the Huli Cat, a sport fishing charter boat operating out of Pillar Point Harbor. Pacific bluefin are not endangered, but NOAA recognizes them as a species that has been overfished by commercial interests, and their stock assessment shows a slight improvement in recent years. They are mature at 5 years of age, and while most range from 60 to 80 pounds, they can get far heavier, and out of San Diego, sport-fishing operations recognize a “300-pound Club.” They are prized on the commercial market for their rich, tender red meat, which sells at premium prices at sushi markets and in Japan. Pacific bluefin tuna are best known for ranging the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean, where they migrate thousands of miles off San Diego and Baja California and westward to Hawaii and beyond, according to NOAA Fisheries, which reports on the status of U.S. Fred Wilson lying with a giant Pacific bluefin tuna he caught out of Half Moon Bay at the Deep Reef Charlie Claycomb Jr. “Unbelievable how close they are, unbelievable how big they are,” said Charlie Claycomb Jr., who with his fishing pal Fred Wilson, caught two in a single trip in fights that lasted up to 2 ½ hours with fish 5 feet long weighing around 150 pounds each.Īnglers like to say hooking a big tuna is like standing on an overpass with a fishing rod, letting the line down and snagging a passing semi truck. The bluefin tuna arrived late last week near the Deep Reef, 10 miles out in Half Moon Bay, where anglers told stories of enormous fish, long fights and even losing 600 yards of line. These were often aberrations where the tuna were mixed in with schools of albacore in the fall, often at distances 30 to 100 miles offshore. “If we can get the gear then we can give the proceeds to the family, and that’s important,” he said.In the past 50 years, anglers have caught Pacific bluefin tuna in a handful of encounters out of Bay Area harbors. Ogg was able to secure special permits through state Fish and Wildlife enabling them to take someone else’s crabs so they could be sold for the benefit of the family. “Just by putting the word out, people started calling and we put together a call list,” he said. In the days since, members of the fishing community have rallied around the family, helping with insurance issues, retrieving personal items and equipment from the boat, and securing Kozlowski’s plotter to try to ascertain where he left his pots, though his system was more complicated than most to unravel, Ogg and Roseberry said.īut Roseberry said there was no doubt the gear needed to be retrieved, and volunteers were ready to help. The Seastar ran aground on Kehoe Beach at the Point Reyes National Seashore and broke apart. It was more than three hours before a Coast Guard aircraft crew spotted him. Several other commercial and sport fishermen were soon gathered, and “everybody was trying to do their part to look around for him,” Zito said. I called the dealership on April 24 and they were going to escalate the part order and get back to me. Now the SRS airbag system needs to be check indicator is on all the time, regardless if a passenger is in the seat or not. I have called the dealership again numerous times, and part is still on backorder. The random SRS warning indicator when passenger was in the front seat and hitting a bump started reoccurring again. The SRS airbag system worked fine and no problem until the end of Feb, 2018. 3 after not hearing from dealer, I called to see why service not completed yet, and was told part was still on back order, should be in sometime in Dec. they said part would be in and I dropped vehicle off for scheduled service for Oct. I didn't hear back from dealership, so called them on Oct. 9, they said they ordered part and would call me when part arrived. System would reset when vehicle was restarted, but would occasionally duplicate the problem. 2017, occasionally when a passenger was in the front seat and vehicle hit a bump, the SRS showed warning indicator and passenger airbag turned off. The dealership ordered replacement part which has been on back order since Sept. SRS airbag system needs to be checked light is on and passage air bag off indicator shows off. Is a recall in order? the consumer stated the manufacturer offered a new vehicle as a settlement. How this potential problem is dealt with is also a concern. I want to be certain that the ntsb is aware that there may be a problem with Subaru airbags in the 2017 Forester. Called 2 weeks ago with the response that they were waiting for a new airbag. This resulted in a rental car which I have had for 7 weeks. I therefore requested written certification of the safety of the passenger seat regarding the airbag. I could drive the car in the interim including with a passenger. They indicated a sensor failure and that the part would take about a month to obtain. This resulted in their specialist reviewing their code reading again. Took it back to dealer held for a couple of days and told a specialist in codes indicated that it was due to usb cell phone wire. Told it was due to a cellphone on the seat. Taken to dealer they found a code verifying the complaint. Once lit it remained so until 2 or 3 new restarts. It occurred both in motion and while the vehicle was not in motion. This did not occur immediately on seating of the passenger and was sporadic. Less than one year after purchase of a new 2017 Subaru Forester I noted periodically the passenger airbag failure light would turn on and stay on when a passenger was in the passenger seat. As of today 10/18/18 Subaru as not corrected the issue. Corporate Subaru personnel have also contacted me concerned about this issue. My vehicle has been at the dealer since and I am still waiting for the part which they keep calling me and telling me it is on backorder. Two days later they told me it was a national back order on the part. They said it would take 2 days to get the part. The service advisor then spoke to a manager and they then informed me that the problem was the airbag sensor in the seat. I insisted however that my seat was never wet nor stained. The dealer claimed that my problem was caused by a stain on my seat, they claimed the mechanic cleaned the seat and they were going to release the vehicle to me. When this occurred the vehicle was in motion every time. The light would randomly come on advising me that the passenger seat airbag was not on. None of those things have caused the malfunction light to go on in my vehicle. When I took the vehicle to the dealer they first advised me that the airbag light was do to the seat being wet, placing a cell phone or lap top on the seat. Two alerts show up in different areas on the dash lights indicating a problem with the passenger air bag advising to have it check immediately by the dealer. The passenger airbag will stop working while the passenger is seated in the front passenger seat. 7/27/2023 0 Comments Dragon dictate 2.5.2 macThe new numbers mode recognizes everything it hears as numbers. This worked well, but it does take a few seconds for the app to send the Tweet so be patient. Dictate your Tweet and say, “Press Tweet” and it will send the message. Just say, “Post to Twitter” and a Twitter box opens up like the one you see to the right. Once I fixed that this feature worked well. As I said above, I learned from speaking to the folks at Nuance that my preferences file was corrupted. Unfortunately setting up the feature crashed Dragon Dictate 2.5 a couple of times. Version 2.5 can update your Facebook or Twitter accounts using the command “post to…”. I was told that an Android app is on the way. The app runs natively on the iPhone or iPod touch. Because the iPad has a microphone they can dictate through it to the software from a remote location. They use the iPad to log into a desktop system at work through a VPN. While talking to the people at Nuance, I learned that some people are using this new feature with their iPads. In fact other than user error it has recognized everything perfectly and accurately. As you can see it seems to be working very well. In order to test this feature out I added a new profile using my son’s iPhone and dictated this paragraph. The following paragraph was dictated using an iPhone 4 with the Dragon Remote Microphone app. Your iPhone Can Type for YouĪn iOS device like an iPhone can be used as a wireless microphone, thanks to the update and the Dragon iOS app. The next thing you dictated would’t be capitalized. Previously, if you dictated a sentence and then edited it with the keyboard and entered a period at the end of a sentence using the keyboard, Dragon didn’t know you ended the sentence. The mouse and keyboard are integrated with the voice recognition. For example, if you dictated a sentence and then realized you misspelled a word, you would confuse dragon if you selected the word and then tried to dictate. In version 2.0 and earlier, Dragon would get confused when you dictated in Word 2011 for Mac if you tried to also use the keyboard to make edits. If you are running OS X Lion you will have to You Talk It Types, but So Can You Deleting it fixed the problem and it runs smoothly now. The program crashed while testing a few features, but I discovered that my preferences file was corrupted. The program responds quickly: you can really just talk at your normal pace and it will keep up the majority of the time. I wrote the majority of this review using Dragon and never experienced a slowdown. The memory leak that caused Dragon to gobble up system resources after about 20 minutes are gone. With the Dragon Dictate 2.5 update we decided to give it another test run in order to see if the biggest weaknesses we faced were corrected. The good news for those who really need or just want to use dictation software, with 2.5 you will need less help, but more is available. With 2.0 I needed more help and found less. Today, you can find more help and support for the Mac program. I found evidence of this in the company’s website.Īt the time I reviewed the product the site provided little information about Dragon Dictate for Mac. It seems that 2.0 was still a transitional version. I learned that MacSpeech was purchased by Nuance and they are still in the process of integrating the Mac version into their product line, other than just changing the name to Dragon Dictate. Better Nuance SupportĪfter reading our review the folks at Nuance contacted me and put me in touch with their Mac project team. It also allows the use of an iPhone as a remote mic and better integration of voice dictation and simultaneous keyboard and mouse use. Thankfully, the update fixed the leak and added the ability to post to Twitter and Facebook. Later we found a trick on YouTube for clearing memory via a voice command. Unfortunately the program suffered from a major memory leak that required a restart of the app after about 20 minutes of use. As we reported earlier this week, Dragon Dictate has been updated to version 2.5 with some interesting social sharing features as well as a huge bug fix that makes the program a lot more useful.Įarlier this year I reviewed Dragon Dictate 2.0 and found that if you are in desperate need of voice dictation due to things like an injury or a physical limitation, then it can make you productive. 7/26/2023 0 Comments Escape room 2#21īike locks can be used to conceal a clue (or the prize). If you’re working with extremely hard materials, such as concrete, paving slabs or metal, make sure your drill bit is tipped with tungsten carbide. It's sometimes also called impact drilling mode. Hammer-action mode – exclusive to combination drills, a hammer action uses short, rapid thrusts to ‘hammer’ hard material such as concrete, resulting in quicker drilling with less effort.Rotary-drilling mode – a mode all drills use to bore holes.Screwdriving mode – a mode all drills use to screw slowly and effectively.Gearsĭrills with two gears tend to be best for slow, controlled screwdriving. Brushless drills are more expensive, though. Benefits include a higher power-to-weight ratio, higher speed, and greater electronic control. Brushless motorĭesigned to reduce friction and resistance. Most drills lock automatically when the speed control is released, but some manual models require you to slide a switch into the central position to ensure that the bit has been securely attached to the chuck. Torque settings are most important when it comes to screwdriving, as too much power can strip the screw head. The maximum torque is the maximum rotary turning force of the drill, which can be important if you will be drilling into tough materials such as masonry – for which you should consider a combination drill, with the extra force of a hammer-action function. Most cordless drills have a chuck size of either 10mm (3/8 inch) or 13mm (1/2 inch). The chuck is the hole into which you slot the drill bits, or other accessories such as rotary sanders or wire-wheel brushes.

Somewhat bemused, Leo calls Ángel to ask if he wrote and submitted the works on her behalf. One day, one of her publishers calls to say how pleased the firm is with Leo's two newest Amanda Gris novels. Leo spends some time resting and reconnecting with her roots. Leo meets with her publishers to discuss her newest manuscript. Overjoyed, she wants to talk to Paco, but her call wakes him up and he accuses her of being drunk before she can relay her news. Ángel calls Leo to tell her he has read the pieces she gave him as examples of her writing and wants to publish one of her essays.
